Istanbul Community Market Competition (2015)

An open community market Istanbul, Turkey

The Instabul Community Market is shaped by a proposal based on a magic emergic carpet concept Which uses emerging market stalls to create an open, vibrant, flexibleand multi-use public space.

The hexagonal shape of the floor and the stalls design is referring to Turkish and Armenian carpet industry tradition. The roof shelter of the market is composed of a structural grid with knots inspired by the "Turkish Knot" in the carpet making.

The use of this hexagonal pattern for the floor provides an efficient arrangement of the market stalls. The capability of these urban elements to emerge and submerge offers a multitude of possibilities for the use of space, transforming the intervention site from a public square to a full function market.

In the background of the site there is an “L-shaped” building hosting all the necessary functions that       supplement the proposed dynamic market space. The wooden façade texture refers to the       architectural tradition of the city.

Proposal for "Build a Bench for Kowloon East International Design Competition" 2013

The primary purpose of the competition is to design a durable, affordable, repeatable public bench capable of comfortably seating 3 – 6 people. The “Hong Kong orchid bench”, inspired by the Hong Kong orchid tree (bauhinia blakeana), embodies the natural (orchid tree) and the cultural (symbol of cleverness) history of the place as well as the floral emblem of the city.
The “orchid bench” offers to the Kowloon East development area a new stylish urban unit. It becomes an element of the city’s public equipment referring allusively to the form of a HK orchid tree flower. This connection between the form of the bench and its location make it a unique and iconic element for Hong Kong. A variety of available trims highlights the fluidity of the form. The available choices of different materials of construction for different areas of the city help it blend in without losing its design identity. The proposed colors are the light grey and light cream, and other colors based on the colors of the HK orchid tree flower and the grassroots green used in the Star Ferry. It is also used the natural bamboo finish for the wooden bench. Made of perforated stainless steel, high grade polycarbonate, ultra high performance concrete, engineered stone or bamboo plywood and in various colors, the Hong Kong orchid bench equips the city in a simple and natural way. REVEALING (the) LAND. Proposal for the European architectural competition RETHINK ATHENS

Our proposal aims to unfold the natural sub-layer of the city – the land – and to point out the idea that nature and urban elements are interwoven and interdependent.
KORAI_MA_1920

Our proposal aims to unfold the natural sub-layer of the city – the land – and to point out the idea that nature and urban elements are interwoven and interdependent. The main concept in our design is to uncover the Attica’s physical substratum as well as the Athenian historical layers, in a creative way. The land becomes the structuring and unifying element of the site. A dynamic relation is thus created between natural and artificial elements, which allows the creation of a new urban open space that is flexible and adaptable to changes.

The “leaf bench” embodies the natural (ginkgo tree) and cultural (tree of life, unity of opposites) history offering Seoul a new stylish urban unit. It becomes an element of the city’s public equipment referring allusively to the form of a ginkgo tree leaf. This connection between the form of the bench and its location make it a unique and iconic element for Seoul.
A variety of available trims highlights the fluidity of the form. The available choices of different materials of construction for different areas of the city help it blend in without losing its design identity.
Proposed construction materials, in a variety of colors, are perforated stainless steel sheets, fiber reinforced concrete, high grade polycarbonate and bamboo plywood.
The proposed colors are based on the 10 Seoul Representative Colors with the addition of natural bamboo finish.

"Flow of Life" Awarded project (honorable mention) for the Spiretec Competition in New Delhi (2011)

"Ροή Ζωής" Έπαινος στο διεθνή αρχιτεκτονικό διαγωνισμό Spiretec Competition in New Delhi (2011)

Large building compounds are usually planned around specific units scattered along the plot. In our concept, land, open spaces and build are equally important and their single conception and expression can produce a successful design. Our proposal relies on two major landscape components that generate the Master Plan.
We propose the introduction of the neighboring water element in the form of a water channel at the “heart” of the site. Two esplanades develop along each side of the water channel 7.20m above the ground. These two main compositional elements offer with clarity a rich architectural space to a multitude of public areas: terraces, decks, walkways, steps, open air theatre, semi-covered spaces etc.
All spaces and both banks of the channel are unified by a structural ribbon crossing through the land from side to side. This ribbon is transmuted along its way to roof cover, shelter, cover for paths, bridge and building skin. In this design proposal the liquidity of the water became a solid organizational element and the materiality of the ribbon turned to a fluid and transitional space structure. The everyday life flows with them.
The textile spatial structure and form of the proposed ribbon produces composite but flexible and dynamic spaces and embodies basic principles of a sustainable and bio-climatic design while forming a building envelope interactive with the sun and the wind.
The materials used for the ribbon can be from conventional steel wires to high-performance fabrics such as synthetic and carbon fibres. The choice of materials throughout the entire project is guided by the intention of using local building knowledge resources and materials for the base of the structure (local stone and wood) while introducing new materials and technological advanced solutions along the vertical development all the way to the residences and hotel rooftops.

"Leaves in the city" for the AthensBenchmark Competition 2010

The leaf-bench is an item of urban equipment with a form subtly reminiscent of an olive tree leaf.

The fluidity of its form can be applied over a variety of materials. The ability to produce the bench in various finishes allows for a different choice of material to match different parts of the city without sacrificing its basic design identity.

The Leaf Bench can be produced in perforated stainless steel, fiber reinforced concrete (FRC), polycarbonate and bamboo.

1st International prize in the interior design competition Suite d` Autore (minimal room)

Subject of the competition was the proposal for a complete interior design (furniture and artifacts of communication included) of 14 themed rooms of the concept hotel Suite D` Autore. The suites should be conceived as a space that delivers, apart from the basic commodities, a canvas for cultural encounters, art events as well as educational relevant uses.

Inside the shell of this historical 15th century “palazzo” in Palermo the guest should be transformed into an actor on the stage and at the same time a spectator in the stalls, stimulated on every sensory level, ready to converse a clear memory as a keepsake for his return home.

“The concept of the Surface” is the title of the proposal. Mies van der Rohe’s less is more, with its propensity towards the subtraction and elimination of everything that is superfluous, clearly exemplifies the philosophy of minimalism. Minimal objects are, by their very nature, reduced to their essence, but is it possible to plan a minimal space without its becoming boring, indifferent, insignificant, devoid of any attraction?

The basic idea for the minimalist suite arises from the elementary concept of surfaces in space, developed via two planes orthogonal to each other: one horizontal and the other vertical. The first, with regard to the guest’s state of relaxation and rest, is developed along a continuous line between bathtub and the plane of the bed, without visual filters or barriers, thanks to the glass wall. The second, regarding “dynamic” activity, comprises the wall furnished with built-in desk and cupboards, in a continuous plane with the entrance wall. In this way the concept is communicated in the simplest way possible, being closely linked to its functions and allowing the guest to feel calm, and at the same time, perceive the energy of this space communicated through its planes. The selection of materials is instrumental in emphasising the basic concept, since it determines the colours as well as the surface-finish: horizontal surfaces in slate, dark and rough; vertical ones in Bakelite, white and shiny.
